Here are seven early signs to look out for to stay on top of your health.
Arm or Leg Pain
Arm pain is another well-known symptom. People having a heart attack have reported feeling a shooting pain up their arms – most commonly their left arm. If you’re feeling this discomfort, it could be time to phone for help.
A lesser-known symptom is leg pain, specifically cramping in your calves. This is quite common in people who have diabetes or are frequent smokers. If you’ve experienced this feeling, booking a check-up with your doctor is probably best.
Indigestion
If you’re regularly experiencing a burning feeling in your chest or stomach, this is most likely indigestion. It can also feel like stomach pain or general discomfort.
This can be an early warning sign of heart disease. To ensure it’s nothing more serious, make sure to book yourself an appointment at your local GP surgery.
Sweat
Before you jump to conclusions, it’s best to think about your situation. Is it hot outside? Are you exercising? Does it make sense to be sweating in the circumstances?
Sweating becomes a warning sign of heart disease when you pair it with chest pains. If you’re starting to feel hot and clammy, with discomfort in your chest, it’s time to phone 999.
Swollen Ankles
There are many reasons your ankles might be swollen. It could be due to medication, pregnancy, or physical exercise.
Swollen ankles become worrisome when the above factors are ruled out. If your ankles become very swollen for a prolonged period, it’s time to see the doctor.
Fatigue
This symptom isn’t just feeling a little tired. Fatigue is extreme tiredness that rarely goes away with sleep.
Think of your current situation. Are you working too much? How have you been sleeping? Fatigue isn’t always related to heart disease, but if there’s little reason to feel exhausted, you should discuss this with your doctor.
Irregular Heartbeat
Jumping heartbeats are more common than you may think. Whilst this isn’t always a cause for concern, it can signify an underlying health problem.
If you notice your heart is jumping inconsistently in your chest and/or beating very fast, you should contact your GP for an appointment. They might refer you for an echocardiogram. This ultrasound scan will help you doctor visualise your heart’s condition, leading to an accurate diagnosis.
Nausea
Feeling sick can be caused by many things. But, once paired with one or more of these other symptoms, it may be a clear warning sign of heart disease.
Even if you feel a bit of discomfort, don’t hesitate to get help if you’re feeling or being sick. While this symptom may be caused by something else, it’s better to be safe than sorry.
