One in five grandparents aren’t using car seats
Researchers have found that a considerable amount of grandparents are not using car seats when taking out their grandchildren in the car. You can read the full article here.
The survey was carried out by consumer group Which?, who asked 313 grandparents about using car seats for children. More than one in five of the people asked admitted to not using a child car seat when driving their grandchildren aged 10 and under. It may seem like a hassle to fit a car seat before going out with the kids, but it’s incredibly important in the case of an accident. If stopped by the police you may actually face fines for breaking the law.
The current UK legislation means children must use car seats until they are 12 years old, or 135cm tall and it is the driver’s responsibility to check.
Fitting a car seat tips
If you’re not currently using car seats for your grandchildren, we’ve put together some tips to make it easier for you.
- Purchase a care seat to fit your car. There are many types of car seats available, but you should check online or ask in-store to check that your car model can fit the seat.
- Is the seat meant to be rear facing or front facing? Make sure the car seat is facing the right direction, this may depend on the age of the child. Be sure to read the instructions fully.
- Watch a tutorial video. A quick search online of your car seat model, may bring you to a video that will take you through installing that particular car seat.
- Ensure the base of the car seat fits well on the seat. If you notice that the seat is hanging over the edge, check that your car is compatible with the seat before using it.
