Today is officially known as World Photo Day – an international event which celebrates photography and the passion that people have for it in communities around the world.
In a world where every day seems to be a national celebration of some kind, according to Twitter at least, it can become difficult to understand and acknowledge the events which are official.
Today is an official celebration and your favourite personal provider is here to help as we give you a quick guide to World Photo Day.
Creation of World Photo Day
The group behind World Photo Day were founded by Korske Ara back in 2009, being celebrated for the first time a year later, on August 19, 2010. The official group have also explained their reasoning behind the August 19 date being chosen as the official day.
Their website states that the date originates from the invention of the Daguerreotype – photographic processes developed by Joseph Nicèphore Nièpce and Louis Daguerre in 1837. A couple of years later the French Academy of Sciences announced the Daguerreotype process.
On August 19, 1839, the French government purchased the patent and announced the invention as a gift “Free to the World”.
World Photo Day state that August 19 was chosen was based on the following merits:
- The Daguerreotype as the first practical photographic process
- The purchase and release of the patent by the French government
What happens on World Photo Day
The main aim of the day is to encourage photographers around the world to “share a single photo with a simple purpose.” Â The World Photo Day group hope to fill their online gallery with unique photographs from different communities and landscapes.
Photographers from around the world take shots of some of the most stunning landscapes and monuments from different angles, at different times of the day, Â and bring them together through the World Photo Day community.
It is hoped that the talents of photographers can shine through on this unique day. We took a look through some of the galleries from previous years and were very impressed with the quality and variety of photographs which were shared.
Photos ranged from a London bus on Tower Bridge to a black and white image of a young girl doing her homework. From cars and boats, to waterfalls and animals – you just don’t know what image you will see next.
To finish each image off, a range of stunning effects are added to add even more sparkle to these amazing photographs.
